Tips on Writing a Letter to your Partner for your Wedding Day

One of the most memorable, picture-capturing moments on your wedding day other than exchanging vows is the moment that you and your partner exchange hand-written letters to each other. The letter you write to your partner before the wedding should be just as thoughtful as your wedding vows. A personal choice of words, full of love, and totally from the heart that only your partner will see.

The Importance of Writing a Letter to your Partner on your Wedding Day

Writing a letter to your partner can help you take a load of those pre-wedding emotions off of your chest. The letter is a nostalgic and heartfelt keepsake for your partner from your wedding day. Letters should be exchanged before or during your first look; And you have the option of including the letter with a small gift for your partner. With that being said, here are a few tips to make sure your love letter is a complete tear-jerker.

TIP # 1. Brainstorm and Reflect on your Relationship

Getting married is a massive step for any relationship; it’s the best day of your life. Reflect on the journey you both have had together and write down some notes of the things you have reflected on. Include little details about why your partner is important to you and why you are marrying them. Start doing this a few weeks before you plan to write the letter. This way, you’ll have a clear idea of what you’d like to include in your letter when you write it.

TIP # 2. Explain how important your partner is to your life

Since you are getting married, it’s probably clear that your partner already knows the important role you both play in each other’s lives. Even though it is unspoken, it’s important that you also express those important feelings in words. Speak about your personal goals and experiences and how your partner's support has helped you grow as a person.

TIP # 3. Write about the first moment when you fell in love with your partner

Bring in the tissues! Be sure to include your “I realized that I fell In love with you when” moment in your letter. This is an important memory of your relationship that will help create a foundation for your marriage that will live on forever. Without falling in love with each other, your dream wedding most likely wouldn’t have been possible.

TIP # 4. Include the little things that you admire about your partner

Your partner should be someone who motivates you and has a positive influence on your life. Actions speak louder than words, and oftentimes we see our partner doing things that we admire about them but we don’t always acknowledge it. Now is the perfect time to get into details about the simple things you admire about your future spouse.

TIP # 5. Write about what you hope the future holds for you together

Your iconic wedding ceremony is a celebration of looking forward to a lifelong future as a married couple. In your letter, write about the evolution of your relationship and the dreams you’re looking forward to achieving with one another.

TIP # 6. It’s absolutely ok to be cheesy

Maybe speaking with a lot of lovey-dovey words isn’t your thing. This is your dream wedding ceremony, with your dream partner, in your dream location. Write about how you truly feel and don't be afraid of how it may sound. We promise the love of your life will appreciate every meaningful word that’s written. Plus, this is the perfect chance to express how you feel without saying it out loud in front of a crowd.

TIP # 7. Write from the bottom of your heart

Remember, this letter isn’t an academic essay. It’s a letter of your genuine emotions and dreams that you have with each other. Don’t pay much attention to grammar or spelling. Focus on how every statement you write is an attachment of your heart. If you make a mistake, cross it out and keep going. If a few tears drop on the paper and smudge the ink, just keep writing. With every word you write, validate the decision you and your partner have made to spend the rest of your lives together.

TIP # 8. Seal it with a kiss and find a trusted person to deliver the love letter

End the letter with a wedding day last line such as:

  • I can't wait to watch you walk down the aisle
  • I love you, my bride/groom
  • Cheers to the rest of our lives together

Seal your love letter to your bride or groom with a kiss. If you wear lipstick, put lipstick on first. You can also rub a dash of perfume or cologne and place it in an envelope. When they open it, they will feel even more connected to you. Give the letter to a trusted friend or family member to deliver to your partner.

About Happenings™

Based in Manhattan, Happenings™ founder Tom Noel would often take a walk through Central Park. In 2008, during one of his walks, he stopped to sit at one of his favorite iconic locations in the Park, the Bethesda Fountain. There, Mr. Noel noticed that the intrinsic beauty that surrounded him was not being fully harnessed. He also realized that not a single business provided the exclusiveness of an affordable and high-quality event planner. Determined to change this, Happenings™ was born.
