Whether you met each other online and live several states apart, or circumstances caused your relationship to turn into a long-distance relationship, if things are working out, there is absolutely no reason why you should end the relationship. Of course, the long-distance struggle can be challenging. It takes hard work, commitment, and dedication to grow into something more serious such as marriage. In this article, we will discuss ways that your long-distance relationship can last and lead to wedding planning.
# 1. Communicate with Each Other
Communication is one of the essential things a relationship should have, regardless of whether or not you are in a long-distance relationship or not. Communication in a long-distance relationship can be exhausting. When communicating with each other, be sure that you listen and pay attention to what the other one is saying. Don’t try to multi-task either! You can prioritize communication in your long-distance relationship by having a set schedule for you and your partner.
# 2. Always Be Honest with your Partner
The truth hurts! But nothing hurts more than finding out that your partner has or is lying to you about things. For example, your friends invited you to the bar… and for some reason, you decided to tell your partner you were going to bed early instead of being honest. What’s done in the dark will always come to light, especially in a time where pretty much anything can be tracked via social media platforms. Just tell the truth! Your partner might be upset (that is a trust issue that should be dealt with). However, you’ll be at peace for being honest.
# 3. Be Committed to your Relationship
Take your relationship seriously. Either you are committed, or you aren’t - your level of commitment should be made clear.
# 4. Take Advantage of Video Chat
Yes, video chat! Use your imagination and have fun!
# 5. Try to Keep Your Relationship Issues Private
You might be tempted to talk dirty about your partner when you are upset. But what happens when you are no longer upset? You’ve just opened a can of judgment from the outside world.
# 6. Set Strong Boundaries
Set your boundaries with each other and stick to them!
# 7. Talk about your Future Goals as a Couple
This one is significant. Where is your relationship going? Is there a possibility of marriage soon or marriage at all?
# 8. Plan Fun Trips Together
Explore the Grand Canyon, take an adventurous trip to Vegas. Meet up at a beach in Florida, or spend a weekend bar-hopping together on Bourbon St. in New Orleans. Whatever floats your boat, find time to take trips together.
# 9. Take Care of Yourself
Self-care should always be your number one priority. Work on personal growth and go after your goals.
# 10. Trust Your Partner
Just like communication, trust is crucial in a healthy relationship.
# 11. Randomly Send Each Other Sext Messages
Get freaky! Find ways to flirt and show your partner that you desire them. It takes a few seconds to send a sexy message.
# 12. Get to Know Each Other
You can never get to know someone too much. Have virtual date nights and ask questions. Sometimes you have to think outside the box.
Check out our LIST of questions that you can ask your partner.
# 13. Allow Yourself to be Vulnerable
For your partner to get to know you, you have to allow yourself to be vulnerable. If you have a hard time opening up, it might be a good idea to seek counseling for yourself to explore those feelings.
# 14. Talk about your Fears
Ok, if you are afraid that your partner will ghost you or leave you for someone closer to them, you have to talk about it. You can explore these fears together. Ask yourself: What is the root cause of these fears?
# 15. Establish a Timeline for your Relationship
Are we getting married already or what? You’ve been doing this long-distance thing for a while now, and you aren’t sure what the next step is. Here are a few things to consider discussing:
How long do you plan on being long-distance?
- How will you reconnect?
- What is keeping you apart?
- Is there a future?
- What does your future together look like?
- Where is there room for flexibility?
- Are you ready to start the wedding planning?
Final Thoughts on Long-Distance Relationships
Nobody plans to get into a long-distance relationship, but it happens. If you find yourself in one, know that you can survive, and so can your relationship. Follow the tips above and build a strong foundation that can lead to a happy ever after.

About Happenings™
Based in Manhattan, Happenings™ founder Tom Noel would often take a walk through Central Park. In 2008, during one of his walks, he stopped to sit at one of his favorite iconic locations in the Park, the Bethesda Fountain. There, Mr. Noel noticed that the intrinsic beauty that surrounded him was not being fully harnessed. He also realized that not a single business provided the exclusiveness of an affordable and high-quality event planner. Determined to change this, Happenings™ was born.
